Work vs. Play

Work vs. Play

Sometimes (all the time) I wish I could wear whatever I felt like wearing to work.  I’m not talking like ‘pajamas and ratty T-shirt’ wear anything, but just  based on whatever my style mood was of the day. Style mood is a thing.. it is reflected upon the weather, current musical interests, etc. Both above outfits were worn the past week when it was particularly rainy and nasty out, and sometimes all you feel like wearing in that sort of weather is a cuddly sweater, perfectly fitted pants, and some wedge booties to protect your toes from puddles.

2014 Golden Globes

Kind of been neglecting this here blog… but what better way to jump into the new year than with some couture?

Award season is always fun because it’s a chance to see some of the most beautiful pieces created by some of the best designers basically in the flesh and “in action” on the red carpet by the celebs. There are always actresses who I know are going to absolutely hit it out of the park, but then there are the few that continually surprise. In both good and not so good ways.

Let’s review shall we…

The Chic…

Kate Beckinsale | Zuhair Murad

Beckinsale cannot go wrong. Have you ever seen her go wrong? Didn’t think so.

Leslie Mann | Dolce & Gabbana

I just think the lace-ish applique neckline and peplum skirt are the sweetest thing on Mann. She’s dainty and pretty and not overpowered by her attire.

Maria Menounos | Max Azria Atelier

This was probably the only look of the night that actually made me stop and say WOW – out loud. Seriously beautiful color and shape.  The makeup and hair doesn’t take away from anything, but actually accentuates the dress and her face. Gorge.

Jennifer Lawrence | Dior

What is with all this hatin’ on Jennifer’s Dior number? I thought this look was beautiful and seamless for the (winning) actress. Not to mention the bold makeup that totally worked in her favor.

Reese Witherspoon | Calvin Klein

Something about the simplicity of this full look made me love it on Reese. I don’t know if anyone else could have pulled it off, but on her it looks effortless. Kind of like.. “Oh hey, y’all! Just put on this old thing and threw on some mascara for the Globes!”  But it works. Definitely works.

The Interesting…

Emma Watson | Dior

I feel like this picture kind of speaks for itself. She’s all “Le sigh, yes I know. I’m wearing pants. At the Golden Globes. My bad.”

Lizzy Caplan | Emilo Pucci

Color-blocking can be very favorable to the body. The whole ‘trim four inches off my waist by sculpting an opposing shade to the sides of my dress’ thing can work wonders. However, in this case it just makes her look a tiny sliver of a person with a robots giant artificially attached arms.. no?

Zooey Deschanel | Oscar de la Renta

I love Zooey and all her quirky, sweet, and sassy ways! Buuut.. I’ve got to be honest and say there is a whooole lot going on here. I don’t hate the shoes, but would’ve preferred something open toe. The hair is another topic. Stick a paper flower in your side bun and call it a day is a little Sophomore year bored in math class style of hair-do.

Mila Kunis | Gucci

Mila, why so angry? Is your ruffled neckline strangling you?! Ponytail a little too tight?! Loosen up lady!

That’s a wrap for now! Until the next carpet…

Holidaze

I am really not meaning to sound like a Grinch here, but this holiday season has been a little more frustrating than most. I did myself a favor by picking up some gifts here and there early on so I don’t have to scramble at the last minute, but I still have a few important pieces to get along the way. The major source of stress is from work, naturally, and not finding the time to actually go out and get said gifts or being able to enjoy all the special holiday activities… and when I do have time I somehow find myself on the couch with hot cocoa and Netflix… whoooops. With all that being said I am still hopeful I’ll get a few days squeezed into December to do all the sparkly, cozy, festive, fun-filled Holiday traditions!

Here is the way I styled the plaid jacket I found at Target I had mentioned in the previous post.

Don’t ask me why I hardly ever have shoes on in these posts. I do not have an answer for you, other than by the time I walk out the door I can assure you I have found a pair.

Festivities

I hope it was a happy Thanksgiving for all yesterday! Mine was a nice little break from the daily grind. We drank (Merlot and seasonal brews), we ate (delicious appetizers made by my sister’s boyfriend including Rosemary roasted nuts and homemade hummus followed by all the traditional Thanksgiving fixins’), and we hung by the fire while trying to come up with decent holiday pictures (totally didn’t happen). We just stayed at my house for the day so I definitely wasn’t about to break out the LBD and heels, but still wanted to be a step up from pajamas.  Here is the live version of the Polyvore set I created in the previous post.

Sidenote: Got this jacket on sale at Target for right under $18 the other day, I thought it was a pretty good investment with the Holiday season here now. It’s a little hard to tell in the picture but the pockets and the zipper detail going down the front is pleather and there are gold buttons on the wrist, makes it look a lot more expensive than it was. FYI – I got an XS and it’s still pretty roomy if you wanted to wear a comfy sweater underneath.

Gobble Gobble

Currently streaming A Very She & Him Christmas album while sipping on hot cocoa, wrapped up in a cozy blanket all in honor of our first snowfall! I’m going to be honest with you here, I actually didn’t go outside at all today. I admired from afar.. while warmly inside planning my Thanksgiving outfit around my favorite new flyaway sweater I purchased this week. I took to Pinterest per usual to get some Holiday juices flowing and it’s got me all giddy for the start of the Holiday season! I’m pretty excited for Thanksgiving this year as it’s going to be the first in awhile (more appropriately – ever) that all three of my siblings will be together, both parents, and newly added significant others + their kids! Let me tell you, it is going to be one packed house. Can’t wait!

Here is the Polyvore I put together of my outfit for the day. The cardigan I bought is from Kohl’s and is super long and comfy, ideal for endless meals throughout the deal after which I will then pass out and utilize as a blanket. The only thing I didn’t include in the set is a top, because that’s still undecided. I loved the rich plum color of Kim K.’s lipstick, so I’ll probably use my NYX Lipstick in the perfect dark raspberry shade to top of the look.

Better Weurk

Sweet little work outfit from the other day. I thought long and hard about tucking the shirt into the skirt, but then realized about how many times throughout the day I’d be consumed with tucking and re-tucking (perhaps I was just feeling a little tired..lazy), so I figured I’d try something new and adventurous by leaving it out!

On an unrelated note, I can’t decide on this jacket or not. Si o no?

I do like it and all, but a part of me is holding out for the perfect cream or blush colored faux leather jacket so I can’t quite commit.

Thoughts?
